What is a .NMMM file?
An NMMM file is a type of backup file specifically for saving copies of notes made in the Samsung Memo app. This app was a tool for writing notes that came installed on certain Samsung Galaxy smartphones, like the Galaxy S7. When users wanted to make a backup of their notes, they could use programs like Samsung Kies or Samsung Smart Switch. These programs would create an NMMM file to store the backup of the notes.
Inside an NMMM file, there's actually a compressed (zipped) folder that contains three different files: memo.bk, SmartSwitchBackup.json, and SSMDummyValue.exml. The memo.bk file is the most important one because it holds the backup of the user's notes. However, it's in a special format that can't be easily opened or read without the right software.
Over time, Samsung decided to stop using the Samsung Memo app and replaced it with a new app called Samsung Notes. For a while, people could transfer their old notes from NMMM files into Samsung Notes using either Samsung Kies, Samsung Smart Switch, or directly through Samsung Notes. But now, there are no Samsung programs that can open or work with NMMM files anymore.
This means if you have an NMMM file, you won't be able to open it with any current Samsung software. There are no known programs available on any platform that can open NMMM files now. This situation makes it difficult for users who have old backups in this format and want to access their notes.
