.SCOREBOARD File Extension

A .SCOREBOARD file is a VMware Virtual Machine Stats File, created by VMware.

Open with VMware Workstation. Available for Linux, Windows, and Mac.

What is a .SCOREBOARD file?

A .SCOREBOARD file is a type of file used by VMware virtualization software, specifically VMware Workstation and VMware Fusion. These programs allow you to create and manage virtual machines (VMs), which are like separate computers running within your main computer. Each VM can have its own operating system and applications, separate from those on your main computer.

The .SCOREBOARD file contains important performance data about a virtual machine. This data, also known as "stats," helps in monitoring how well the VM is performing. The information is stored in a binary format, which means it's not readable by humans directly but can be used by the software to display performance metrics. These metrics are useful for optimizing and troubleshooting the VMs, ensuring they run efficiently.

You can view these performance metrics through a feature in the VMware software called the Scoreboard widget. This widget displays the data stored in the .SCOREBOARD file, allowing you to see various performance details about your VMs.

The .SCOREBOARD files are typically found within the storage files of the VMs. For instance, in VMware Fusion (which is used on macOS), these files are saved in the .VMWAREVM file located by default at Macintosh HD/Users/[username]/Virtual Machines.

Although these files are useful for enterprise environments where monitoring multiple VMs is necessary, individual users might not need them. If you prefer not to have these files created, you can disable their creation. This is done by adding a line "vmx.scoreboard.enabled = "FALSE"" to the .VMX file within the .VMWAREVM file.

In summary, .SCOREBOARD files are used by VMware Workstation and VMware Fusion to store performance data of VMs. They help in monitoring and optimizing VM operations, especially in environments where multiple VMs are used. You can open these files using VMware Workstation or VMware Fusion, and if needed, you can disable their creation to save space and reduce unnecessary file accumulation.
